Your immune system is a network of processes within the body that protects against disease by identifying and killing pathogens and tumor cells. Unfortunately, due to poor dietary lifestyles and environmental toxins, many people are finding that their immune systems are being seriously impaired. Consequently, we are seeing a rise in chronic illnesses and auto-immune diseases. Following are a few tips you can follow that have been shown to boost your immune system.
Eat whole foods every day
Whole foods are natural foods which include vegetables, whole grains, legumes, and fruits that have not been refined or stripped of nutrients. One of the major impediments of immunity is a diet of food which has been stripped of vitamins and minerals, either due to processing or poor soil quality. By eating whole foods, you are giving your body the nutrients it needs to defend and repair itself.
Get proper sleep at night
Sleeping allows the body to recharge itself so that it can have the energy to handle its responsibilities when you are awake. Sleep has been linked to many benefits including balanced hormone levels, brain function, stress reduction, and improved mood.
Cultivate a positive attitude
Never underestimate the power of the mind when it comes to your health and immunity. In a study conducted by psychologist Sheldon Cohen of Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, it was found that a positive attitude and optimistic emotional state increased one’s immunity. The results of his study, published in the journal Brain, Behavior, and Immunity, points to enhanced regulation of an infection-fighting substance, interleukin-6, in people with positive emotional styles.
Get regular exercise
Moderate regular exercise has been show to increase one’s immunity. During moderate exercise there is a temporary increase in the production of macrophages, the cells that attack bacteria. Exercise also stimulates blood circulation which allows immune cells to circulate through the body more quickly to kill bacteria and viruses.
